The Government Against the Minutemen?

What's wrong with this picture?

No, there isn't really a picture. It's just a phrase. A damn fine phrase, we would add, on a day in which there are so many weird, out-of-sync news bits dominating.

The yippin' and yappin' continues over the charge by certain Border Patrol people that the U.S. government, chiefly through the Department of Homeland Security and, possibly, elements of the limp-wristed state department, are tipping off Mexican authorities on areas where the volunteer Minutemen are on patrol.

And apparently there's a lot of fire to go with that smoke, according to Andrew McCarthy over at National Review. He has a nice overview of the flap and points out, as have others, that this new immigration news may be singularly responsible for President Bush's dismally low poll approval ratings. A couple of big points:
The Minutemen have been maligned by pro-illegal-alien lobbyists, swaths of the mainstream media, and—infuriatingly—President Bush himself as a “vigilante” group. In fact, they are a vigilance group.
Hear, hear! In fact, let's hear more about the Minutemen.

The project is a lawful association of citizens, multi-ethnic and multi-racial in background, who assiduously monitor the way government performs one of its most basic enforcement missions. That is to say, it does pretty much what CAIR and the ACLU do—except its efforts inure to the benefit of American national security rather than death-row inmates, terrorists, privacy extremists and self-styled dissidents … and thus it is frowned on by our high-minded clerisy.

The Minutemen are doing what the government refuses to do: closely watching the southern border and very publicly reporting to the under-resourced Border Patrol the tide of illegals pouring across. This sometimes shames our reluctant government into enforcing the immigration laws.

Obviously, the feds don’t like to be shamed.
Ya think? Read the rest yourself.

Not that we ever get "polled" but we can't see ourselves as having too many nice things to say right now about anyone in Washington, D.C., or in Oklahoma City, regardless of party.

That doesn't necessarily translate into a big liberal win at the polls next November, although it might serve some people right if the country were handed over to the Dems for a good mishandling for a couple of years. We'll probably hold our nose and vote for the lesser of evils, but if a new party espousing strong borders, fiscal responsibility (as in control spending and resist the impulse to hike taxes), and traditional moral values should come into existence, then we'd say a plague on both Repubs and Democrats.

Looks like Mr. Derbyshire already said the same thing, better:
This thing about our govt. colluding with Narcistan — sorry, I mean Mexico — to keep the flow of illegal immigrants coming, is the last straw. Either our govt. is criminally incompetent, or else it is maliciously hostile to ordinary American citizens. Or both.
...
I can't think of a single thing to say in favor of the national Republican party, its senators, representatives, governors, and administration. I can't think of a single reason why, right now, I should vote for any of them.
Of course, his colleagues over at The Corner are pointing out there isn't much in favor to speak of Democrats either.

Will someone please market some common sense pills, and quickly.

I am distressed of how the media has portrayed Americans that believe in what the minutemen are doing.I see them as the only ones American enough,to speak for us as a people. Not racist,we are from every race,we have come together as one people. The message from the illegals movement is telling us this was their land before and they're taking it back.Their leaders have misguided them, they burn, turn upside down and fly our flag under theirs, showing they are in the dominance in our own land.If they want to be American, learn our language, assimilate to our culture,do not glean from our resources and leave us with nothing.I am the mother of five, grandmother of four, raised decent hardworking children that build, save and defend our country. Why would we be seen as radical, because we want to have a decent living for our family? You have a family,do you want to support other people only loyal to their own. This is what has been the saving of America,Americans help one another, especially in time of need.We give and give, but now are expected to give to those who want to take over our country.Americans are being forced to stand up and fight for what they believe in,we email, call, write letters and to no avail. We're not being heard, with the minutemen,I have a voice,I will be heard. It seems that to stand up for what we believe, our laws,we are being called racists.RACIST?I am Cherokee,Irish and English, how on earth can I be called a racist, because I do not want our country becoming a third world country as they've made their own.As our way of life, health, finances and future are being completely wiped away, standing up for what we believe is now making us an enemy?Maybe it's the ones we have trusted to keep us safe and betrayed us into believing they were for us,when it's destroying us.Why hasn't the media mentioned the minutemen rally in DC this past week? You see,our founding forefathers stood up for what they believed and were not wavered by those who said they were traitors. If it had not been for these brave men,we would still not have America. We will complain in our homes, but still let aliens take for free everything we work for.If you can help,in any way,the minutemen as they do what many should be doing, speaking out for our laws to be upheld, defending our borders from people that are coming to take not just your food, jobs, cars, homes and way of life, but bringing diseases, gangs and drugs, that is their way of life.If you do not believe me,go to the websites of their leaders, see who is driving this movement. The truth was the first march, you saw all those mexican flags, the second march they had been told to fly american flags, because they were awakening a sleeping giant in our people and showing us their real agenda.Where mothers and grandmothers are being forced to speak out to ensure thier way of life. The May 1st illegals march was broadcast for weeks, the minutemen caravan was blacked out by the media, the media could then say minutemen do not speak for all the people.Oh,my fellow americans, they speak for thousands upon thousands of us.The minutemen message is to have our laws upheld and stop our country from being hijacked financially and by crime. What has happened to our America? What will happen, look around you,in Northern Virginia, they keep coming and coming, the grocery stores are now catering to their food, they're culture, where normally we would have holiday and seasonal displays for years.Open your eyes, look around, don't close your eyes like it's going away. How can you believe those that allowed this situation will take care of it to benefit us?9 11,one of the first things you do in an attack that killed thousands would be to shut our borders. What people were more important, maybe the millions who have come in since.Jobs we won't do,well, how about wages we won't take, because we could not afford to feed our family let alone theirs.Print this out, post it in laundromats, street posts, workplaces, forums, vote for leaders who will take our country back and uphold our laws.God Bless America!
