The Brady Bunch diss Florida
The misnamed Brady Campaign to Control Gun Violence, based in Washington, D.C., has taken out of a huge worldwide advertising buy against tourism in the State of Florida.
Vacationing in Florida, according to these anti-Second Amendment vigilantes, may be hazardous to your health. Some gun-totin' Floridian may just decide to shoot you. Maybe it's because your a foreigner and talk funny. Maybe Floridians are just argumentative at heart and looking for a good excuse to "make their day."
And maybe the Brady Bunch have at least attained the level of illogic previously reserved for members of PETA.
Here's what their ad looks like, courtesy of The Scotsman.
At issue is a new state "stand your ground" law that allows law-abiding citizens to use guns to thwart criminal acts in places other than inside their homes or on their property. It grants a limited right to intervene with deadly force to halt certain types of serious crime or physical harm against individuals. Proponents believe that criminals are far less apt to use firearms to commit crimes if they fear that an armed citizen might see and come to the rescue of an intended victim, be it a cashier at a supermarket or a young woman alone in a dark parking lot.
The National Rifle Association helped promote passage of the law, so naturally the Brady Bunch is against it. So much so that they are willing to "gun down" Florida's multi-billion dollar tourist industry (already hammered by two years of huge hurricanes) to make their point. Says Brady spokesman Peter Hamm:
"It's a particular risk faced by travellers coming to Florida for a vacation because they have no idea it's going to be the law of the land. If they get into a road rage argument, the other person may feel he has the right to use deadly force."Florida tourism officials aren't too happy about the ad campaign:
"It is sad that such an organisation would hold the 900,000 men and women who work in the Florida tourism industry, and whose lives depend on it, hostage to their political agenda."Our view is that the Brady campaign against gun violence is really only against gun violence done to lawbreakers at the hands of a well-armed citizenry. They would see all Americans disarmed and thus easy prey for those with weapons. How does that discourage violence? Only a liberal could think so. Isn't it instructive, too, to see that the typical lefty urge is to run their mouths off overseas to anyone willing to listen about how misguided and dangerous are Americans these days.
Pathetic.
