Death of a tax hike

Oklahoma voters shot down State Question 723 today. Turnout, as expected, was low but the margin of defeat was even greater than statewide polls had suggested. Some 87% of those voting said "no," and it might have been a record defeat.

The odd thing was that more people signed the initiative petition that led to the state vote than actually voted for it: Roughly 290,000 citizens signed the original petition. With 93% of the precincts counted tonight fewer than 47,000 voters had said yes. Over 321,000 said "no."

Maybe the legislature and governor will get the message: Cut fat, eliminate pork, find the necessary money.
