New Orleans a bit behind schedule

New Orleans recorded the first murder since Katrina hit yesterday. Another person is in critical condition.

Over two months without a murder is pretty amazing for a modern American city.

Sadly it was the Big Easy's 205th homicide of the year, compared with 225 by this time last year.

But cheer up, murderers of New Orleans. There are still six weeks left in 2005 for you to catch up.

Seriously, for a city its size, New Orleans has had a horrendous murder rate. Let's hope the Katrina, besides killing a thousand people and shutting down an entire area of the country, improved the morality of the Crescent City. It would be great if at least one good thing could come of this.
